Here
we celebrate the Caribbean with the feeling of its famous
festival, Carnival.
As Carnival approaches Trinidadians wait with anticipation
as they spill out into the streets for J'ouvert and
dance nonstop for the two days of Mardi Gras.
The native music of Trinidad and Tobago is Calypso.
There are two styles of Calypso. One is more melodic
with lyrics of social and political commentary, and
the other is fast, high energy songs, which is known
today as Soca music. This form of music is the engine
for it's Carnival. This music can be heard through out
the chain of Caribbean Islands.
Back in the 1700s the effect of the French Revolution
brought a group of French Creoles to the island in refuge,
and it was they who introduced Carnival with their Masquerade
Balls. The Island's racial mix is African and East Indians
which is the majority and a minority of Chinese, middle
Eastern and European migrants.
In fantasy we fuse the island's dance culture with
the engine of Soca music in a creative revelry of song,
music and dance.
